Acne is a common skin condition that can cause the development of whiteheads, blackheads, and pimples. It arises due to clogging of pores with oil and dead skin cells, which result in the formation of comedones. When the pore is entirely clogged, closed comedones, or whiteheads, are formed. When the pore is partially obstructed, open comedones, or blackheads, are formed. Although more common in teenagers, acne can affect people of all ages. Over-the-counter medications can treat mild acne cases, but prescription-strength treatments may be necessary for severe cases.
